Claudia Piñeiro
Argentine writer who questions norms, power, and society
Perhaps the first step toward freedom is questioning who decided what it means to be ‘normal’
We often use the word “normal” as though there were only one correct way to think, behave, or live. However, what feels normal to some people may be completely different for others.
Claudia Piñeiro, one of the most influential voices in contemporary Latin American literature, is an Argentine author, playwright, and screenwriter. Her works, several of which have been adapted for film and television, explore power, corruption, gender, and social tensions, making her a prominent voice in public debate.
Drawing on a career devoted to questioning the structures and conventions that shape our lives, Piñeiro invites us to examine the labels we use to define others. Her reflection reminds us that calling something “normal” can become a way of imposing a single way of being while excluding different experiences, identities, and choices.
Everyone should be free to be who they want to be and choose how they live, as long as they respect others, remain true to their ethical principles, and cause no harm. Questioning normality does not mean rejecting every social norm. It means asking who established those norms, why they exist, and whether they truly respect human diversity.
