Face uncertainty. Keep your eyes on your goal

In the midst of uncertainty, seeing the bigger picture reminds us that obstacles are temporary and that our goals remain ahead of us

When we are going through a difficult moment, it is easy to focus only on the problem in front of us and feel as though it will last forever. Uncertainty can narrow our perspective and make us forget that circumstances change, obstacles pass, and every difficulty represents only one part of our journey.

John Sellars is a renowned British philosopher and historian, Reader in the History of Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a specialist in Stoicism and philosophy as a way of life. Through his study of thinkers such as Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, he has explored how ancient wisdom can help us address contemporary challenges involving self-knowledge, resilience, and conscious decision-making.

Drawing on this experience, Sellars invites us to view difficulties from a broader perspective. This approach reflects a central Stoic idea: we cannot always control what happens, but we can decide how we interpret it, how we respond, and where we direct our efforts.

Keeping our long-term goals in sight can help us regain a sense of calm, make better decisions, and continue moving forward even when we do not yet have all the answers. Facing uncertainty does not mean knowing exactly what will happen. It means recognizing what is within our control and trusting our ability to adapt, overcome obstacles, and continue building the future we hope to achieve.
